Background

Oak Bay is home to many valued parks, including Uplands Park.

Uplands Park is unique for its concentration of rare and endangered plant species including Garry Oak meadows and woodlands, maritime meadows and vernal pools.

During the winter months, the walking trails in Uplands Park often become muddy and difficult to navigate, making it a challenge to stay on the designated paths. These conditions can limit accessibility for individuals and put rare plants at risk of damage.

Where we are today

A raised boardwalk and upgraded pathways have been completed at Uplands Park to improve safety and accessibility while also helping to protect the park’s sensitive ecosystems. This project was a recommended action identified in the Uplands Park and Cattle Point Management Plan (2019) and was a Council Priority Project funded in the 2025-2029 Financial Plan. Next year, staff will be updating signage in this park to support education and awareness about the plants that can be found in Uplands Park and Cattle Point. Close collaboration with the Friends of Uplands Park in the planning of these improvements was instrumental to this positive outcome.
