With fall and winter comes picturesque leaves and west coast rain. These signs of the season are a reminder to adopt a catch basin in your neighbourhood!

What is a catch basin?

Catch basins across the District of Oak Bay help remove excess water from streets when it rains and snows. By keeping these catch basins clear, you help prevent localized flooding caused by blockages of leaves and debris.

How can I help?

Adopt a catch basin in your neighbourhood! Take time each month to ensure it’s clear of leaves and materials that block water from entering. A few minutes of work can ensure our catch basins are prepared for each season:

  • Fall – For when trees shed their leaves

  • Winter – For occasional snowfalls we receive in the region

  • SpringWhen debris collects from the fall and winter seasons

Tips to remember

  • Be aware of your surroundings - When clearing a catch basin, look out for cars and cyclists. Do not step out into traffic and wear reflective clothing when cleaning

  • Use the right tools - Use a broom or rake when clearing leaves and debris. Wear gloves and be careful of sharp or hazardous objects when using your hands.

  • Keep pathways clear - Move collected leaves off the road and sidewalks to ensure safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians. You can place leaves in a leaf collector for pickup during the District’s annual Leaf Collection.

  • Leave the heavy lifting to us - Do not lift the grate from the catch basin. If there is debris you can’t collect, please contact Oak Bay Public Works.
